The Lord reigns forever; he has established his throne for judgment.
He rules the world in righteousness and judges the peoples with equity.
The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.
Sing the praises of the Lord, enthroned in Zion; proclaim among the nations what he has done.
I think about our earthly institutions and how justice is merited out. As I enjoy a good mystery movie, I invariably watch the sheriff or police departments investigating crime in these movies. As the plot progresses, many times the lead character “helps” the detective or sheriff solve the crime. This is a good way to relate to the audience, as everyone likes to think they have what it takes to solve complex cases and arrest the criminals. Reality is, understanding the criminal mind and stopping evil perpetrators is a dedicated occupation, not a whimsical fancy. It takes training, intelligence, analysis, a thorough process, and relationships and resources. Experience and skill matter.
As Christ-followers, we also have another avenue for justice, one of greater weight and more powerful insight — God. He is omniscient, or all-knowing. He sees into the heart of man. While a detective may have a lifetime of experience in administering justice, God has the experience of all of the accumulated lifetimes that ever existed … multiplied to infinity.
We can run to him when this world is unfair or judges poorly, and he is a refuge for us. He is trustworthy. He does not forget his promises. To those who seek him, he gives his protection. And he looks out for his children!
Lord, thank you for holding up the case of the oppressed. I need not worry about the earthly outcomes when my Heavenly Father sees and knows all!
