I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.

In this world we see many who promise one thing, but in their hearts, they plan on, and actually deliver, something very different indeed. On many TV shows and commercials, we see the things that are sacred, like worshipping God, keeping the covenant of marriage, and having pure thoughts and speech, torn down from the model of what is good and right. In their place we have adultery, lying, stealing, anger, worship of oneself, and all other manner of impure things. Popular songs are about revenge and wishing others ill for hurting us, taking the pleasures we want from each other, etc.

But as Christ followers, we see that there is a higher plain to live on. We are called not to be drawn back into sin. I love this passage in Colossians: “Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.” ‭‭(Colossians‬ ‭1:21-23‬)‬‬

We must remember not only the evil traps we fell into, but also the deceptions and lies that led us there. Division and man-made obstacles are clear indicators of a prideful heart and a false doctrine. We must stay away from those who peddle in gossip, finger pointing, and all manner of deceptions. And we must simply seek out God each day. Stay focused on His Kingdom and His will.

Lord, help me to identify and avoid the entrapping of this world and seek you where you may be found. Instant pleasure is tempting, but the long-term love and faithfulness you promise is much more fulfilling in the end!
