Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

From the teen years to the late twenties (and for some a little longer) is a time of many changes for young men. In addition to much change and growth in their bodies, they are also trying to develop their own identities and figure out what they believe and who God made them to be. It is important for them to have solid role models they can walk with, learn from, and build values from.

Self-control is a term that, many times in the media, is portrayed as “low fun”. But it has little to do with fun and more to do with wisdom. Being out of control in life can wreak havoc and create a lot of “low fun” situations for you and others in the long-run. When the Bible talks about self-control, it means controlling one’s selfish desires for immediate gratification regardless of the impact or consequences. Sin leads to destruction and death. So when we engage in sinful activities, such as cheating, stealing, sexual immorality, hoarding and greed, gossip, filthy language, anger, etc., it destroys our connection to a holy God and it hurts those around us.

The number one way I have found to have self-control and live righteously is to do good. God wants us to serve him and others. If we pray and ask him for the strength to serve and give sacrificially, we will be filled to overflowing with lasting joy and love in our hearts. This comes from God.

Paul charges Titus here to live a life of integrity, to be serious in his commitment to the gospel, and to have a sound speaking platform as he preaches. Pastors must base their preaching on the Bible. They cannot allow themselves to arrogantly think that a certain opinion they have is worthy of standing up to God’s Word. And that is what some do, when they take verses out of context, twisting the truth, to apply to their personal theories.

Overall, Titus is called to be a teacher and mentor who serves under the guidance and authority of God, through the redemptive work of Jesus, by the purifying power of the Holy Spirit!

Lord, teach me to continue to grow in my ability to mentor and love those around me. Help me to invest in others and model humility and grace along with a strong determination to follow your ways!
