David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the one to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: “Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord will never count against them.”

A covering over the bad things one has done is a pretty amazing thing. This makes me think of the great imagery of protection in Psalm 91:1-4: “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”

The truth of the matter is God longs to have our hearts bent on following him. He wants this more than our human attempts to be “good enough”. He wants for us to dwell with him and when we make him our master and Lord and serve him, he credits it to us as righteousness. In John 14:6 it says: “Jesus answered, “‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”

‭‭So we know The Way to God (Jesus). We have seen Jesus speak in the Bible and model for us the truth about God, and when we ask him into our hearts, we EXPERIENCE LIFE dwelling with God. He covers over us and does not count our sins against us. His protection, his love, including us in his family, his power and might — why would I want to be anywhere else except in his presence?

Lord, thank you for your covering over me. I am so blessed by you! You set my heart at peace even when storms rage outside. Inside, you are in control!
