Beyond Dreams and Fantasy Novels‭‭ - I Corinthians‬ ‭2‬:‭9‬-‭12‬

However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”— the things God has prepared for those who love him— these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.

What is your favorite fantasy book series you have read, or movie you have seen? I remember The Chronicles of Narnia books that my dad read to me as a kid. These were pretty amazing books. There are tales of fawns, cyclops giants, and witches. There was magic, wardrobes, journeys and treacherous waters, battles that looked too hard to win. The interesting thing about The Chronicles of Narnia was there was a lion that kept showing up to save the day. His name was Aslan.

The children, who found themselves moving from the world of men to the world of Narnians, were entrusted with so much. And yet, though they made mistakes, they had a great and powerful lion on their side.

When I think about the first part of this passage in I Corinthians, Paul is talking about something close to a dream. It is the works of God that might seem as impossible to us as a magic wardrobe or a picture that pulls you into a make believe world. He says “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human mind has imagined“. This is talking about the great things that God has prepared for us.

Do I choose to believe that God has greatness prepared for me? Can I believe in the unfathomable greatness of his plans to include us in his story? Or will I believe the lies of this world that he is too busy or doesn’t care about my individual life and my personal needs and desires?

I think the key component here is that he prepares greatness for those who love him. We must love him as he loves us. In order for us to see the greatness God has for us, his Spirit must transform our minds and our hearts to be people of God‘s love.

God‘s love cannot exist in our minds and hearts if we are not obedient to him and his commands. So many today like to pick and choose the things they want to obey in God‘s word. But it is not a buffet where you get to choose what you want to partake of. It is a living and breathing organism, the word of God, that represents God‘s heart. When we choose to live a life in disobedience to God, we are separated from God. We are operating in the spirit of the world.

However, if we cast aside the ways of the world and operate in the Spirit of God, we will experience the wonder and amazement of God. This goes far beyond the fantasy novel, and into truly unbelievably rewarding, spiritual gifts he gives us.

Lord, thank you so much for this promise. I will hang onto it. I will treasure it. And I will believe it. Show me your greatness as I seek after you with my whole heart. Convict me of the sin in my heart. Help me to repent and move forward and obedience.
