Light Transmitters - ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭22‬-‭23‬

The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

How does the eye work, you ask? Great question! Here is an explanation I found online at www.nei.nih.gov/eye-health-information/healthy-vision/how-eyes-work: “All the different parts of your eyes work together to help you see. First, light passes through the cornea (the clear front layer of the eye). The cornea is shaped like a dome and bends light to help the eye focus. Some of this light enters the eye through an opening called the pupil (PYOO-pul). The iris (the colored part of the eye) controls how much light the pupil lets in. Next, light passes through the lens (a clear inner part of the eye). The lens works together with the cornea to focus light correctly on the retina. When light hits the retina (a light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye), special cells called photoreceptors turn the light into electrical signals. These electrical signals travel from the retina through the optic nerve to the brain. Then the brain turns the signals into the images you see.”

It is a completely detailed process for us to “see” an image. It seems so automatic, but it is very complex.

Light enters through the cornea to the pupil, then through the lens to the retina. There are a lot of phases to processing light. Then it goes through the optic nerve to the brain to create a picture. This process is designed to take something and distill it into something more valuable.

If our eyes are not healthy, we live life in physical darkness. Eyes bring us light.

There are people who bring a lot of light to a situation or room. It seems that from inside them, there is a light that shines and is shared with others. Their souls are light transmitters. These people have allowed the light of Jesus to shine through them by being obedient servants to preach truth, disciple and mentor others in the faith, and follow Jesus.

Their light shines out to a world full of darkness. It is like purity, truth, right living, joy, patience, kindness and grace are the stages of filters this light passes through on the way out to the world. If we are consumed with sin and deeds that are of the darkness, we will have a dim light indeed. But if we surrender our hearts completely to the Lord Jesus, and allow him to reign in our hearts, these light filters produce a clearer picture of how great God is!

So we pursue a pure life in Jesus Christ so that our lights might shine brilliantly in this dark world to bless others!

Lord, thank you for this passage about eyes and light. You want us to be spiritual light transmitters to shine the way to eternal life through your Son Jesus. Purify the light in my heart today!
