Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

Ephesians 2:17-22
He [Jesus] came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
Jesus is not saying that he does not like his family here. Instead, he is saying that he has another family, made up of disciples that he calls brothers and sisters and mothers. Those who follow him and trust in him are his family.
The passage in Ephesians relates this to a spiritual house with Jesus as the cornerstone. What an incredible thought that we are being built together spiritually into a house with our brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ. We can encourage and support each other as we live and serve.
Good families are loyal and serve each other. And as Christ followers, we are on a Jesus-lead rescue mission together. The mission objective is to bring souls to salvation. And we can work together, tag-team so to speak, in loving on others, speaking the truth, and serving together.
At times we may feel alone, or like strangers in this world. But if we follow Jesus, we are never alone or strangers. He is our brother. He watches over us and watches out for us like a good big brother should.
Thank you, Lord Jesus, for inviting me into your family. You are the head of my spiritual family, and I get to grow into spiritual maturity with the best-ever mentor — you. Fill me with your Spirit and teach me to be a good brother to others.
