Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”
What is the bright flashy thing in my life that, once seen, I am in awe of?
To the disciples, they were in awe of the temple buildings the Pharisees had built. They were mesmerized by them. They might have thought, “If only we could have leadership offices in one of these buildings when Jesus’ kingdom comes!”
Jesus short-circuits their dream by telling them that these impressive buildings will all be destroyed. This prophecy came true later on as the Romans attacked Jerusalem.
When I seek after and crave the things of this world, I will be sorely disappointed. The world and its pleasures, toys, property, prestige, and power are fleeting. God and his Word his will, and his ways stand the test of time — they last forever. So I should invest in eternal assets and spiritual goals that have lasting rewards.
Lord, help me to focus on your kingdom work and the spiritual blessings I have and will receive when I serve you first and foremost. Disciple-making is the work and saved souls are the currency of heaven.
