[Jesus speaking]
So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the housetop go down to take anything out of the house. Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again.
--Parallel Verses:
Daniel 11:31-35
His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they will set up the abomination that causes desolation. With flattery he will corrupt those who have violated the covenant, but the people who know their God will firmly resist him. “Those who are wise will instruct many, though for a time they will fall by the sword or be burned or captured or plundered. When they fall, they will receive a little help, and many who are not sincere will join them. Some of the wise will stumble, so that they may be refined, purified and made spotless until the time of the end, for it will still come at the appointed time.
This passage includes clear instructions for the Jews. It is a prophecy that describes, in my opinion, the end times. It tells the Jews and others who follow Jesus, living in Judea, to flee to the mountains during this time. It is an urgent warning and a marker of bad times to come. Then Jesus will come again.
Many refer to this time as “The Tribulation”. It will challenge the faith of those who walk through it. We must pray as followers of Jesus that this time will not come in the winter. For some reason this will make it more difficult — likely the presence of ice/snow and cold conditions.
I want to be clear here: this is a warning, but not a call to fear the future. If I follow Jesus with a whole heart, his Spirit is inside of me, and he will guide me through any challenge, provide what I need, and take me home to Heaven at the right time.
Lord, we call on you to make this time happen in the summer. We pray for protection over the Jews and your people everywhere. Help us to faithfully follow you. All praise, glory, and honor is yours. Amen!
