My son, pay attention to my wisdom, turn your ear to my words of insight, that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge. For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave. She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it. Now then, my sons, listen to me; do not turn aside from what I say. Keep to a path far from her, do not go near the door of her house, lest you lose your honor to others and your dignity to one who is cruel, lest strangers feast on your wealth and your toil enrich the house of another. At the end of your life you will groan, when your flesh and body are spent. You will say, “How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction! I would not obey my teachers or turn my ear to my instructors. And I was soon in serious trouble in the assembly of God’s people.” Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well. Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares? Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers. May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.
This is a proverb of encouragement and a warning from Solomon for his son.
And it is very appropriate for the time we live in, as well. You could always find houses of ill-repute and wayward women, who many times are run by brutal overlords. Now our world has an extra dimension — online sexual perversion.
This quote says it all: “For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword.” The same is true with online sexual perversion, as well. It promises so much, but it only delivers heartache and pain. Broken relationships trail behind sexual immorality.
In the end, people who give themselves over to such worldly pleasures become more selfish and less loving.
This proverb is a plea from a man who had many wives (rumored over 200) and fell away from God, likely, in part, due to the immersion of different gods through his wives and sexual practices. And when you read Ecclesiastes, you hear a man who has been broken, talking to others about what matters.
Solomon is the ultimate example of someone who was given so much, had a great relationship with God and was granted wisdom. This wisdom was seemingly beyond any wisdom of any person this world has ever known (save Jesus). But he rejected this for worldly pleasures and fell away from God. Then he came back to God.
So from a man who probably experienced more sexual pleasure than most, this is his advice: “drink water from your own cistern.” Fulfill yourself with your wife. For those who are not married, a practical step of obedience here is to save yourself for your future wife.
The basic building block of any society is the family. The family is made up of a husband and wife, and many times with children. These children also deserve to have a committed family unit. This gives them stability and a great foundation to build and grow off of. For parents who separate, divorce, engage in adultery or sexual promiscuity; these sinful things tear apart families.
Some of us must repent of the sins of sexual promiscuity. We must turn from them, while there is still time. God wants to know us intimately, and he has great plans for us. But he will not join us while we are operating in a purposely sinful life. So some must repent, they must weep and wail. They must anguish over their sin and turn away from it, and the places in which it draws them in.
Take time to assess the state of your current relationship with God and any struggle you may have with sexual immorality. Start anew. Begin again. Transform your life by the power of the Spirit of God. Repent and call on God. He will answer you. Ask him to be your Lord and Savior.
Lord Jesus, thank you for rescuing me from sexual sin in the past, and from a heart of selfishness. You made me, and after i sinned, you picked me up broken and made me new. You renewed my soul. Teach me and help me to remain HOLY! I’m under your control. Instead of selfish sin, help me to selflessly serve others. I want to follow you and keep striving for a life of perfection, under your control.
