We have heard it with our ears, O God; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago. With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our ancestors; you crushed the peoples and made our ancestors flourish. It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and THE LIGHT OF YOUR FACE, for you loved them. You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob. Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes. I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory; but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame. IN GOD WE MAKE OUR BOAST ALL DAY LONG, and we will praise your name forever.
At 52 years of age, I have seen quite a bit of life. And one constant I realize about life is … it changes. Relationships change, jobs change, economies change, fads change and popular music changes. So many changes, that many people try to insulate themselves from the change.
There is one constant, unchanging thing in our world — God and his character. He is unchanging. He is also the most powerful and wealthy person we could ever imagine. The good news is, if we follow him wholeheartedly, he will dwell with us, protect us, and grow us up into mature and effective spiritual warriors.
This Psalm is written by the sons of Korah, and it describes some of the attributes of God:
- He provides for us
- He drives out our enemies
- He makes us prosper and flourish
- He fights our battles for us with his right hand
- He carries our burdens and walks us through challenges on his shoulders
- He shows us his face, the radiance of his perfect presence
- He brings us victory
- He loves us
- He is our King
- He is trustworthy
- He is mighty
So in a changing world, how does the size of my challenges and struggles stack up to the size of my God?
Lord, thank you for this shot in the arm today! You are all I need. You are planning for my best. You protect me and give me victories. Help me to trust you and not give in to the temptation, to fear and worry. Thanks for being my King and my God!
