Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness. May he judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted ones with justice. May the mountains bring prosperity to the people, the hills the fruit of righteousness. May he defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; may he crush the oppressor. May he endure as long as the sun, as long as the moon, through all generations. May he be like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering the earth. In his days may the righteous flourish and prosperity abound till the moon is no more. May he rule from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.
Here we find a humble prayer by King David. He is asking God for justice. He’s asking for righteousness for his son. He trusts God.
We can ask for God‘s help in standing up for the needy and the oppressed. Rulers have a responsibility to rule with justice and grace. They are not just to be greedy and take all the resources of the kingdom or governed area. Instead, they are to provide for the people. They are also to pay close attention to those who are in desperate situations and try to help them.
He prays for prosperity for his people. He prays for the land to bring forth fruit and food for them.
This is such an important prayer by David and it’s a great model for us as we lead others. We need to think about their needs and pray for them. We need to also pray for ourselves that we will be God-like in how we deal with those that come across our paths.
Lord, thank you for this model from David. It is a prayer of humility. It is a prayer of honesty and he requests your help. Help me to go to you frequently in prayer with my needs and be humble. Thank you for all the ways you’ve blessed us!
